The artist has given the entirety of his £25k Mercury Prize prize money to the MVT, which works to protect the Britain's grassroots music venues.

He was awarded the prize on October 16 as his third album his work was named the outstanding release of the last 12 months.

Fender has opted to give the cash to the Music Venues Trust, in appreciation of the essential function local spots fulfilled in his beginning days.

"I personally wouldn't be doing my current career if it hadn't been for all the gigs I did around the area, and elsewhere, when I was beginning," remarked the artist. "These spaces are renowned, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – roughly 16% of the whole industry in the UK.

In the last year, top acts like Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its efforts to help venues survive, by adding a modest fee to their ticket prices, which supports independent venues.

Fender also joined in, generating more than £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to assist thirty-eight local spots across Britain.

The donation assisted venues that were facing potential shutdown due to issues caused by floods, fire incidents and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, conflicts and noise complaints.

Other venues obtained funding support in improving facilities and sound and lighting systems that directly benefitted artists and fans.

"The idea that funds from concerts in big venues supports the independent spots, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just common sense," the star has stated.

The Joiners in the city and the other in the city were purchased under the community ownership initiative, which is backed by the arts council and music fans who acquire "ownership units" in the venues.
